  CULTURE SHOCK

Upon arrival to Grenada, I was not sure as to what to expect from this country. I was not extremely familiar with the culture and had not done extensive research before departure from the states. However, from the moment I stepped foot onto Grenadian soil, I noticed how friendly and welcoming everyone was. Every person I came into contact with was open to talk and very appreciative of our reasoning for coming. No matter where we were, whether we were walking the beach, performing exams, or just riding in the taxi, the people of Grenada were smiling at us, waving, and coming up to speak with us.

In addition to being extremely welcoming, I noticed that everyone knew everyone on the island. The whole island is a community and everyone treats each other as if they are family. The people of Grenada look out for each other and were kind enough to spread this love to us while we visited.

Another huge part of Grenada included the importance of spices, herbs, and fruit in everyday life. Grenadians value the things that come from the Earth naturally and utilize it to the best of their abilities. I remember I had an ear ache from the high mountain altitudes throughout the trip and numerous times I was advised to place a couple drops of warmed up olive oil in my ear to relieve the pain. The use of everyday items was of importance whereas at home I would have easily taken a Tylenol. The things of the Earth are what makes Grenada, Grenada and it was eye opening to be a part of that for a while.
