       HOME VISITS

One of our last learning experiences was performing home visits. This was one of my favorite days aside from the hospital. We loaded up the van and headed to St. Marks where I was able to perform blood pressure checks, glucose monitoring, and breast exams. It was touching to go out into the community and into their homes to educate and provide basic health care to these individuals. I had men and women who did not realize the importance of monitoring blood sugar and women who had never even performed a self breast exam before. I was able to teach and implement what I had been practicing and learning all year. It was such a rewarding feeling and reminded me as to why I chose nursing as my way of life in the first place.

A moment that stuck out to me during this experience was when I was in the home of an elderly couple who were caring for their grandchildren and their grandson walked up to me and asked to speak with me privately. The boy couldn't have been older than age 9. I walked with him outside where he proceeded to ask me for more information on prostate cancer so he could tell his dad when he came home from work. Looking at this little boy care that much about health and so intrigued to learn to help his family and himself later in the future was warming and solidified my passion for nursing. I knew at the moment that this was what I was destined to do and the importance education has on men and women, regardless of their age and background.
